Fort Fisher’s heavy 32 pounder seacoast artillery piece in Shepherd's Battery receives some tender loving care and maintenance. The salty and sandy marine environment is hard on wood and metal so the wooden carriage and steel cannon tube were sandblasted, hand scraped, wood-filled, caulked, primed and repainted in June. The site staff was assisted in the scraping and painting by Friends of Fort Fisher member Jacob Frawley from Haslett, MI who was vacationing at Kure Beach and wanted to contribute his time and energy to improving the historic site.
