Storms of Shot and Shell

June’s Second Saturday program featured artillery firing throughout the day from Adams Battery 10 pounder Parrott and 3 inch rifle and Fort Fisher’s 12 pounder Napoleon. Photographer Harry Taylor demonstrated Civil War period photography techniques, and Dr. Chris Fonvielle presented a talk on his newly published book Fort Fisher 1865: The Photographs of T.H. O’Sullivan. A highlight of the day was the recognition of State Representative Carolyn Justice (Pender/New Hanover) for her leadership in saving funding for NC Historic Sites during the Legislature’s recent budget deliberations. In appreciation, the Friends of Fort Fisher bestowed an honorary commission of Colonel of the 36th NC Troops on Rep. Justice who then delivered the orders to the gun crews to fire another round!
